Building Blended Master Programs in Rehabilitation in Kenya and Tanzania

AfroRehab2030 is a transformative partnership dedicated to strengthening the rehabilitation workforce in East Africa by developing innovative, interdisciplinary Master’s programs in rehabilitation.
This is an ambitious initiative under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education Program. This transformative project is a collaboration between four universities in East Africa—two in Kenya and two in Tanzania—and two universities from Europe.
Our mission is to bridge the gap in rehabilitation services in Sub-Saharan Africa, where one in five people, or approximately 210 million individuals, require rehabilitation services due to a combination of infectious and non-communicable chronic health conditions.

Why AfroRehab?
AfroRehab is a transformative partnership dedicated to strengthening the rehabilitation workforce in East Africa by developing innovative, interdisciplinary Master’s programs in rehabilitation. This initiative addresses the critical shortage of trained professionals in the region, aiming to improve access to rehabilitation services and promote research in alignment with the World Health Organization’s Rehabilitation 2030 Call for Action. Our consortium includes four African universities (two in Kenya and two in Tanzania) and two European universities (from Norway and Finland). Together, we are creating the first two interdisciplinary MSc in Rehabilitation programs in East Africa, tailored to the specific needs of each country. These programs will offer profession-specific exits, blended learning, hands-on placements, and participatory research. By empowering healthcare professionals with advanced skills and fostering sustainable career paths, AfroRehab contributes to equitable access to rehabilitation services, especially for vulnerable groups in rural and urban areas. Additionally, the initiative will produce digital professional development courses, tele-rehabilitation networks, and research hubs to further enhance the region’s rehabilitation capacity.
